Hornby-made model trains are a recognized brand among millions of model train enthusiasts all over the world. Innovation, consistency, and interchangeability are just a few of the words that can describe Hornby and its products which can be traced down and credited to its creator Frank Hornby.}Modern ways of manufacturing toys during the early twentieth century was given new meaning by Frank Hornby due to his innovative thinking. Frank Hornby’s legacy is the Hornby Railways Company which has its origins of making model construction equipments and has now become one of the most creative model train manufacturers in the world.

The company Frank Hornby began at first wasn’t named as Hornby Railways Co. In its place, Hornby started a small manufacturing company he named Meccano Ltd. in 1908 and the Meccano trademark began which immediately became a success in less than two years.

Seven years prior to the setting up of Meccano, Hornby applied for a patent he called “Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People” which was consist of models of trucks, cranes, and other models derived from construction vehicles. The particular characteristic that Hornby’s scale models has is how they can be interchanged with other pieces and models of the same brand. Soonafter, “Mechanics Made Easy” became the later name for Hornby’s model scale lineups. This is the sort of innovative idea Hornby products is known for which standardized model train collecting.

Production of model toys by Meccano continued even with the arrival of World War I. Hornby has also introduced a new lineup of model train products which had clockwork motors imported from a German company known as Marklin which also manufactured Meccano products under license in Germany. In World War II, on the other hand, Hornby’ company was forced to stop their production. Only after the war did production resumed but production of model trains under the Meccano brand name ended.

By 1925, Hornby presented model trains run by electricity powered by 100-250 volts which was later on converted to 6 volts DC to be much safer for customers. The 00 scale model trains powered with a DC 12 volt motor were then introduced during the 1930s and is now the most well-liked kind of scale in the UK.

The two main models of railroading made by Hornby Railways are the Skaledale and Lyddle End. Although both have similarities when it comes to accessories, the Skaledale is significantly much smaller than the Lyddle End model which is 1:76 scale. The Skaledale and Lyddle End models are modeled after specific places in England. Buildings and natural sceneries are captured and made available by the two main railroading models.

The Hornby brand name is also admired in many parts of the world namely Europe, North and South America, and Australia.

The endeavor of Hornby to setup a factory in the United States during the 1920s was not as successful as other Hornby sites in Europe. Hornby intended to manufacture model trains modeled after American trains but one-dimensional clockwork motors and the 1929 stock market crash forced Hornby to halt the venture completely.

Model train afficionados these days are regulars of Hornby model railways. The reliability, durability and quality of Hornby scale models made it possible for model train fanatics to take pleasure and take pride of their model train collections and how they design their track layouts and wirings.
