They are fueled by coal-burning to heat water and the steam produced provides the steam locomotive its power and velocity. While steam locomotives are not as fast or as economical as their modern counterparts, they are more prevalent because of their sentimental value and their iconic shape is what makes steam locos appealing than other model trains modeled after modern locomotives.
Diesel Electric Trains
Diesel electric locomotives are the next generation locomotives that supplied better efficiency and velocity. Even though they were invented in the early 20th century, these locomotives are still used today by rich and poor countries alike. Next to steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives have a popular model train fan base.
Distinct sizes in model trains are classified in scales and gauges and the scales that dig up the most fan base are H0 and 00.
